Kilroy attends bill signing for Serve America Act

Rep. Mary Jo Kilroy, who did two stints as an VISTA volunteer in Ohio, was on hand last week at a Washington charter school when President Barack Obama signed into law the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act.

Kilroy, a Columbus Democrat, wrote an amendment that expands the scope of Americorps VISTA -- a federal program founded in 1965 as Volunteers in Service to America -- to allow members to serve homebound senior citizens and participate in childhood obesity nutrition programs. The law's namesake is the veteran Democratic senator from Massachusetts.

Kilroy served as a VISTA volunteer during the 1970s in Dayton and Cleveland, working on housing, poverty and after-school education issues, said Paul Tencher, her spokesman.

This is the freshman lawmaker's second bill signing. The first was at the White House, when Obama signed the State Children's Health Insurance Program overhaul.
