COLUMBUS, April 6, 2009 — The Columbus Gay Men’s Chorus (CGMC) will present its Forte Award to local artist, educator and activist, James Arter, at its annual fundraiser, Forte, on May 16, 2009. Arter, Associate Artist at the Greater Columbus Arts Council, has had a deep impact on the Columbus community, and his works align with the goals and vision of CGMC.

"We are tremendously pleased to present this award to Jim. As an organization, we work within an outreach model of 50% arts and 50% social justice, and Jim is the quintessential embodiment of our vision. All aspects of his life have been dedicated to the arts and to making the community a better place for all to live and work,” said Matthew Arnold, CGMC executive director.

Arter is the recipient of multiple community awards and his artwork is in collections both nationally and internationally. In addition, he has worked for many years in education and community programs for youth, and has supported CGMC and other organizations within the gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender (GLBT) community.

After learning that he will receive this award, Arter commented, “As an artist, member of the GLBT community and longtime supporter of CGMC I am profoundly honored to receive the Forte Award. I find being an artist and working for social-justice goes hand-in-hand, not so much defining the things I do but who I am as a person.”

This year marks CGMC’s third annual Forte fundraiser, with a theme of 80’s Prom Night. CGMC will invite guests to participate in a three-course meal, live band and dancing, prom photos, prom court, live and silent auctions, etc., all within the walls of the gymnasium at Pomerene Hall at The Ohio State Univeristy. All proceeds will benefit CGMC and its mission of Voices Raised, Lives Changed.
