History of National Coming Out Day

Every October 11, thousands of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and allies celebrate National Coming Out Day. They hold workshops, speak-outs, rallies and other kinds of events all aimed at showing the public that LGBT people are everywhere. But what’s so special about October 11? How did that become a day aimed at encouraging LGBT people to come out and be honest about themselves?

Coming Out Day
Facebook App

Whether you're lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or not, be proud of who you are and your support for LGBT equality this Coming Out Day!

Use HRC's Coming Out for Equality Facebook app to show your support and spread a message of equality to your friends and family. It's the courage to come out as an active voice for LGBT equality that will result in real political and social change. New actions for equality will be added to the app each week leading up to Coming Out Day.

We can't do this alone, but together we can make a difference.
