Nearly 12 years after the issue first came up for the city of Columbus, domestic partners of city employees now will be eligible for health-insurance benefits.
Doug Caruso wrote last week that the issue was heading toward a council vote. (Mayor Coleman had said he would push for domestic-partner benefits again during his State of the City address early in the year.)
“By voting in favor of this ordinance tonight, we have made good on a long-standing commitment to ensure that all city employees are treated fairly and that they have equal access to health care benefits,” Councilmember Andrew J. Ginther said in a statement after tonight's vote.
