The Fight to Repeal DADT Comes to Ohio!

clipped from www.hrcbackstory.org This post comes from Nick Veach, HRC’s field organizer in Ohio: Touching down in Columbus, Ohio, late last week, I started organizing to demonstrate strong local support for repeal of the discriminatory “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT) law in advance of a vote in the U.S. Senate that could come at any time. Senator Sherrod Brown has long been a vocal supporter of repeal, but Senator George Voinovich has not yet indicated how he will vote when the issue comes before the Senate. A Republican, Voinovich bucked the right wing of his party last year to vote in favor of the fully-inclusive, Matthew Shepard Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act.

One of the most exciting things we did during Cleveland Pride was to ask local folks to make phone calls to Senator Voinovich on the spot urging him to support repeal of DADT. Very fitting, these actions took place at Voinovich Park.

As we prepare for a vote on DADT in the Senate, much work remains to be done in

Ohio. From phone banks to town hall meetings to lobby visits at the senator’s offices, there are plenty of ways for Ohioans to get involved.
