Congresswoman Mary Jo Kilroy's Statement in Recognition of World AIDS Day

Having a World AIDS Day is a great initiative; however it is not enough to express the gravity of this disease and how urgent it is to promote awareness throughout the globe.

AIDS is a disease that can affect people from all walks of life. It does not discriminate.

Everyone can play a part in the fight to prevent further infection, and it is essential that Americans are educated, get tested, and promote awareness so that we can find a cure for this terrible disease.

It is also critical that we make the required investments in HIV/Aids research and treatments. The 111th Congress is deeply committed to HIV/AIDS research, treatment, and prevention. There is no better example of this commitment than the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Extension Act which was signed into law on October 30, 2009. The investments in this historic legislation will ensure that those infected with HIV and AIDS have access to life-saving care, treatment, and support services. It also makes investments to improve care in regions of the country with the highest rates of HIV/AIDS, and helps eliminate disparities in access to care.

However, while investments in treatment and research are critical, we must remember that HIV/AIDS is 100% preventable. On this World AIDS Day, I encourage everyone in central Ohio to protect yourself by becoming aware and getting tested.
