How LGBT-inclusive workplace policies are good for business

Betty Young, the out director of diverse segment marketing for American Airlines, touts the benefits of developing inclusive sales efforts to reach various constituencies that are backed by equally inclusive workplace anti-discrimination and benefits policies. "We are instilling a more enduring sense of loyalty and commitment and helping to motivate our LGBT employees to be all we can be and to bring our whole identity to work," Young writes.

Guest Commentary: More Americans today say an employee’s
sexual orientation shouldn’t have any bearing on how they’re judged at the
workplace. That’s a statistic that executives and business leaders should pay
attention to.

My career at American has defined what corporate values and diversity leadership mean to me. I can’t speak for all 80,000 of my co-workers, but I can say why I believe diversity in the workplace is a journey that advances the opportunities for all to be successful.

What do Americans think? This week, a national workplace survey commissioned by Out & Equal Workplace Advocates, and conducted by Harris Interactive with Witeck-Combs Communications, asked heterosexual Americans their beliefs about fair workplace treatment.
