14 Leading LGBT Travel Journalists To Experience Columbus


MEDIA ADVISORY

WHO:

Fourteen leading LGBT travel journalists and bloggers from New York, Chicago, Washington D.C., Toronto, Pittsburgh and Detroit touring Columbus to research travel stories on the city.

WHAT:

Experience Columbus is hosting this group of LGBT travel writers from across the U.S. and from Toronto for a three-day media familiarization tour. The traveling press corps will visit local attractions, dine at area restaurants and experience Columbus shopping and nightlife. Throughout the trip, the journalists will meet and interact with Columbus gay business owners and community leaders.

On Saturday, August 6 the group will attend the Short North Gallery Hop and the Short North arches will be lit in rainbow colors to welcome the guests to Columbus.

Thursday, August 4 through Saturday, August 6 with the group departing Sunday, August 7.


WHY:

  • The LGBT community is one of the fastest growing travel sectors.
  • Columbus is widely known as an open and inviting community and a leading LGBT destination.
  • Experience Columbus has long reached out to diverse groups of travel writers, but this is the organized group LGBT media tour of this size.
  • The trip and Columbus’ reputation as an LGBT friendly destination was so popular with journalists that a waiting list was developed for the trip.

VISITING JOURNALIST BACKGROUND:

  • Tony Benitez & Cory Churchman are Producers, Correspondents and Photographers for Reel Gay TV. Owned by Manmade Multimedia Inc., Reel Gay TV produces entertainment newsreels that are distributed to clubs throughout the world, with a particular concentration in North America. Reel Gay is a visually exciting window into the world of circuit parties, pride celebrations, athletic competitions, fashion shows, award shows, in-store events, book signings, concerts, political events and everything that touches the gay community.

  • Andrew Davis is the Managing Editor of Windy City Times magazine. Windy City Times covers the gay and lesbian community in Chicago and surrounding areas. Topics include news, culture, entertainment and health news, while providing a forum for gay opinions and issues.

  • Troy Petenbrink is the Entertainment Editor at Metro Weekly. Metro Weekly is a magazine written for gays, lesbians and bisexuals in the Washington, D.C. area. The magazine contains interviews of local and national personalities, local and national news features, lifestyle features, opinion columns, humor, politics, arts reviews and nightlife coverage.

  • Lawrence Ferber is a Freelance Writer who covers Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual Issues, Travel, Film, Music, and Art and Entertainment. He lives in New York, New York. Ferber was formerly the assistant arts editor at The Front Page and has been a full time freelance writer since 1997. He has a bachelor’s degree in film production from North Carolina State University.   • Thomas Routzong and Steven Skelley are Co-Editors of Gay Travelers Magazine, Florida Cruise and Travelers Magazine and Senior Cruise and Travelers. Gay Travelers Magazine covers gay travel and focuses on sensible and established gay travels. It reaches new and established gay travelers through gay pride organizations, travel agents and resorts and features travel news, tips and reviews for the sensible gay traveler.   • Chris Azzopardi is the Entertainment Editor of Between the Lines magazine owned by Pride Source Media Group. Between the Lines targets Michigan’s gay and lesbian community by providing analysis, news reporting, unique profiles, interviews, avant-garde entertainment, arts coverage and lifestyle features. Azzopardi is also the Associate Editor of the Q Syndicate. Q Syndicate offers content and community to the gay and lesbian press. Features include travel, entertainment, sports, editorial cartoons, puzzles, movies and more.

  • Matt Mills is an Associate Publisher and Editorial Director at Xtra Toronto. He is also an associate publisher and editorial director for fav, Xtra Vancouver and the editorial director for Xtra Ottawa. He serves as the editor in chief for The Guide. He lived in Toronto, Ontario. Xtra Toronto is a magazine owned by Pink Triangle Press. It is formerly known as Xtra! and is edited for the gay and lesbian community in Toronto.
