CLEVELAND -- Gay and other unmarried couples in Cleveland may now begin registering
their relationships at City Hall.
Today is opening day for the city's domestic partner registry, which supporters have said will
provide a form of proof for unwed partners to obtain health insurance, hospital visitation rights
and other privileges typically reserved for married couples.
To register, partners sign a form acknowledging that they share a home and responsibility for
one another. There's also a $55 fee.
Despite objections from some local religious leaders, Cleveland's city council voted in December
to make the city the third in Ohio with a domestic partner registry, along with Cleveland Heights
and Toledo.
